It is one thing when an ordinary airplane rises into the air, even if it is designed for a couple of hundred passengers, and quite another thing when a creation of the human mind, tens of meters long, capable of carrying hundreds of tons of cargo, appears in the sky.

At various times the honorary title of the largest aircraft in the world were different winged machines. For example, among them in the 1930s was a unique eight-engine propeller plane ANT-20 “Maxim Gorky”. Today there are other leaders in this field, although the records they set many decades ago still hold. “Around the World” invites you to get acquainted with some of these record-breakers.

The most incredible: the AN-225 Mriya.
This is the plane with the biggest payload in the world (it can carry 250 tons of cargo) and the biggest takeoff weight (more than 640 tons), as well as the biggest in length and wingspan out of the ones put into operation. Let’s deal with the dimensions first: the length of “Mriya” is 84 meters, and its wingspan is 88,4 meters.

The cargo cabin of “Mriya” is an airtight space of 43 meters long, 6.4 meters wide and 4.4 meters high (that is, about the size of a two-storey house), it can accommodate, for example, 50 cars. The airplane was invented and built in 1984-1988 at Kiev Mechanical Plant for transportation of “Buran” space ship and carrier rocket parts from production site to launch site, and also if necessary “Buran” as a whole: it was supposed to be placed on the “back” of “Mriya”.

However, this giant did not fulfill its main duties for a long time: by 1990, all the works under the Energia-Buran program were folded up, and the An-225 was half-assembled from 1994 to 2001. By 2001 it was restored and since then it has been regularly used to carry heavy loads, including record-breaking transport operations.

“Mriya” has already made flights with the longest (42.1-meter wind turbine blades) and the heaviest monocargo (generator weighing 174 tons), as well as with the largest total weight – 253.8 tons. Altogether the Mriya has more than 200 world records of this kind. The plane is a single specimen, which is operated by the Ukrainian Antonov Airlines. However, it is possible that in a year or so, the Antonov Design Bureau in Kiev and the Chinese AICC will complete the second one.

The An-225 “Mriya” is the aircraft with the largest wingspan among all the ones put into operation. This reservation is not accidental: in the history of aviation there was an even bigger plane, but it made only one test flight at the height of 21 meters with the length of about 1,5 km. We are talking about the Hughes H-4 Hercules, a giant flying boat built by 1947 by the brilliant (and crazy) American aviator and businessman Howard Hughes.

Hughes’ eight-engine monster, 66.6 meters long with a 97.5-meter wingspan, was conceived as a means to ferry cargo, military equipment (a total weight of about 70 tons) and up to 750 soldiers across the Atlantic from the United States to Europe. The project was started in 1942 by the American government, but it was delayed for five long years. The Second World War was over, but the megayacht still would not take off.

In the end, it alerted the U.S. government and Congress, under pressure from which Howard Hughes made a test flight on November 2, 1947, near San Pedro, California. The flight was the first and the last. The Hercules was kept flying until Hughes’ death in 1976, and then changed hands until it finally ended up in an aviation museum in McMinnville, Oregon, where it remains to this day. The most remarkable thing about this plane is not even the largest wingspan of any aircraft ever flown, but that the machine was built of birch, or rather birch plywood: affected by the lack of aluminum during the war. Despite this, the plane was nicknamed the “Spruce Goose” – it became a synonym for the expression “white elephant”. The Hughes H-4 Hercules is also the largest seaplane in aviation history.

“Hercules still retains the high-profile status of the largest seaplane in history and the owner of the largest wingspan (98 meters), although it was created under the leadership of American tycoon Howard Hughes during World War II. Several circumstances spoil the picture: designed to ferry 750 soldiers in full gear across the Atlantic, “Hercules” has never crossed the ocean and remained the only copy, and a wooden one. Such an exotic material for aviation was chosen because of the limitations imposed by the war situation in which the U.S. economy found itself – with respect to metals, especially aluminum, there was a shortage. In 1947, the wooden Hercules did take off, but the project was abandoned.

In this category, the Airbus A380 in the 800 modification takes first place. This is the largest production airliner in the world: its height is 24.1 meters, its length is 72.8 meters, its wingspan is 79.8 meters, it can carry a total of up to 853 people (in single-class configuration) over a distance of 15,700 km on its two decks.

It is the aircraft that today flies the second and third longest commercial flights – from Auckland, New Zealand, to Dubai (about 17 hours) and from Dallas, Texas, to Sydney, Australia (about 16 hours). During this time, the planes cover about a third of the length of the equator (the first longest commercial flight since February 2017 is on a Qatar Airways flight from Oakland to Doha on a Boeing 777-200LR).

Airbus plans to create enlarged versions of this airliner – the even more capacious A380-900 for 900 passengers (all in economy class), as well as a cargo version A380F, which will be the second after the Mriya in terms of cargo capacity. And both of them, presumably, will be even longer in length and wingspan. So far, however, no such aircraft has been built: there are not enough orders for them.

Despite the capacity, in 2021 the largest passenger plane was withdrawn from production. A total of 254 machines were produced, and so far carriers continue to use the Airbus A380.

It is interesting that the Airbus A380, with its gigantic size and record capacity, is not the longest passenger aircraft in the world. This title is held by the former number one among Boeing 747 airliners in version 8. The Boeing 747-8 is the third generation of the double-deck 747, which made its first flight back in 1969 and entered commercial service about a year later.

The record of this airplane in terms of weight and capacity among passenger airliners was kept for 36 years – just till the appearance of the Airbus A380. At the same time, some of its records are still unbroken. The Boeing 747-400 in 1989 made the longest non-stop flight for commercial airliners, covering a distance of more than 18 000 km from London to Sydney in 20 hours and 9 minutes. There was no cargo or passengers on board.

The Boeing 747-8 is produced in two versions – passenger (747-8I) and cargo (747-8F). In the near future, it is likely that another version will appear – a highly specialized one: the U.S. Air Force is looking at the 747-8 as the future “number one” – for the U.S. president. The 747-200, which was put into service in the late 1980s and has been extensively reworked compared to its production version, performs this role now. Notably, a Russian trace appears here: the Boeing 747-8I, which was ordered by the bankrupt Russian company Transaero and is now stored in the Mojave Desert in the USA (due to climatic conditions, planes stored there at a special landfill are virtually immune to corrosion), is to be converted into a presidential flight.

In 1991, a Boeing 747 set a world record in passenger transport: during the military operation “Solomon” to evacuate Ethiopian Jews to Israel, 1,112 passengers were seated aboard the 747 and reached their destination. Among other things, the aircraft was also used to transport Space Shuttle spacecraft from the production site to the launch site. The 747-8I is the longest passenger aircraft in the world.

It was considered, that Boeing 747-8 was shot in the movie “Casino Royale”, supposedly this plane was saved from terrorists by James Bond. But at the time of filming the model did not exist, and the role of the airliner was played by the disguised Boeing 747-236B.

The Boeing 747 is also a record-breaker in terms of popularity in the world. It is known that more than a thousand and a half of such airliners were produced.

Surprisingly, the giant Mriya was not all-powerful. When Boeing needed to establish a supply chain of parts for the latest Boeing 787 Dreamliner, its capabilities were insufficient to transport Dreamliner wing and fuselage parts from Japan and Europe to the plant in Washington state. Moreover, none of the existing airplanes (the Soviet AN-124 and Boeing’s own 747-400F) suited the company, and bringing in parts by sea would have been too long. Then Boeing engineers developed (not without the participation of the company’s Moscow bureau) a modified version of the Boeing 747, calling it the Dreamlifter.

The difference of this, frankly, rather ugly aircraft (Scott Carson, President of the Boeing commercial division, even had to jokingly apologize to Joe Sutter, the 747’s creator, “for what [they] did to his plane”) is visible to the naked eye: The 747 is noticeably swollen – the hull diameter has been greatly increased, and its tail section opens sideways for loading.

As a result, the engineers managed to achieve a record interior volume of 1,840 cubic meters. Note that the Dreamlifter is not unique. The American Aero Spacelines Super Guppy (used to transport and carry spacecraft parts) and the European Airbus Beluga, which transports aircraft parts to the Toulouse factory, were built for the same purpose. Both of them, however, have a smaller useful volume.
